The Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery is located approximately 21 miles north-east of Payson in the Tonto National Forest. At 6,500 ft., the area is perfect for picnics, hiking, and observing wildlife. There is an abundance trees including Ponderosa and the fall colors can be great in this area! The hatcheries unique setting provides habitat for many wildlife species. Rainbow and brown trout are raised at the hatchery, as well at the state fish of Arizona, the Apache trout.

On this week’s “Adventure Where We Live", we go fishing on some of Rim Countries most popular trout streams! Tonto, Christopher & Canyon Creeks. The three can be reached by going E. on 260 from Payson. Tonto Creek 17 miles from Payson, Christopher Creek 5 miles further and Canyon Creek 12 miles further off the Young Rd.

In this weeks Adventure Where We Live we take an easy hike on the Rumsey Park Loop Trail. Located in the center of Payson, it’s a great trail for hikers, bikes and a great place to walk your dog. It offers some of the most stunning panoramic views of Payson, in this just over a mile loop.

In this weeks Adventure Where We Live, we take a trip up the Barnhardt Trail, which is a great adventure opportunity during the cooler months, since it lies S. of Payson in a bit lower elevation with warmer temperatures. The trail offers unique views and interesting features, amazing views and even a seasonal waterfall area. This is a fairly significant hike with some steep up and downs and is recommended for more experienced hikers.

This weeks Adventure Where We Live, we take a hike on the Dude Fire Memorial Trail… created in honor of the 1990 victims of the Dude fire, which claimed the lives of 6 members of the Perryville Fire Crew near Bonita Creek Estates North of Payson on June 26th 1990. It is a 1.4 mile relatively easy up and back round-trip trail, accessible to all ages and abilities with an elevation gain of 124 feet.
